The length of a degree

How to find out the length of a degree, feet and elbow.

 

The length of a degree of latitude can be obtained by the formula:

The length of one degree of latitude = COS (Phi) *111152.8928 m

COS degree of latitude of Your location (Phi) must be multiplied by 111152.8928 m (the length of one degree on the equator).

 

Equator (total length):
L (length) = 40015041.41 m;
L 1° = 111152.8928 m; (40015041.41 m / 360° = 111152.8928 m)

 

It’s very simple … 

 

EXAMPLE:

1).  Know the geographical coordinates.

 2). Enjoying a search string. 

 

 

 3). Compute COS.

         

 

COS (31.76871455) = 0.850180302;

 

4). Multiply the length by COS degrees.

0.850180302 * 111152.8928 m = 94500 m  

 

5). Calculate the length of a foot and elbow.

Foot and elbow twice refer to parameters of the Earth:
foot is equal to 1/100 seconds of arc degrees, and elbow 1/1000 seconds of time!

Space:

a) 31° 46’0737” N = 31.76871455
Cos = 0.850180302;
L 1° = 94500 m;
L 1’ = 1575 m; (94500 m / 60 ‘ = 1575 m)
L 1” = 26.25 m; (1575 m / 60” = 26.25 m)

1 foot = 0.2625 m (foot is equal to 1/100 seconds of arc degrees);


Time:

L 1° = 94500 m
L 1’ = 23625 m (94500 m / 4’ = 23625 m)
L 1” = 393.75 m; (23625 m / 60” = 393.75 m)

Or:

94500 m * 360° = 34020000 m
34020000 m / 86400” = 393.75 m  (L 1” )

1 cubit = 0.39375 m (cubit is equal to 1/1000 seconds of time or 1,5 ft);

 

1 Royal cubit = 0.525 m (1/50 of a second length or 2 foot);

 

Foot and elbow, is only a symbolic name the measures of length.
